Prabhu, (Indian Institute of\nAstrophysics, Bangalore) report on behalf of a larger collaboration\noptical observations of GRB 021004 obtained from the 2-m Himalayan Chandra\nTelescope, Indian Astronomical Observatory, Hanle:\n\nWe have monitored GRB 021004 in BVRI bands and obtained spectra with a\nresolution of 1.8 nm on 2002 October 4. The spectrum in the range of\n500-1000 nm at October 4.883 UT shows z=1.38 and 1.60 reported in GCN\n#1569 and also indicates a higher redshift of z=1.72. The absorption-lines\nidentified are:\n\nObs (A)\tident (A)\tz\n\n5576\tFeII 2343\t1.38\n6093\tFeII 2343\t1.60\n6166\tFeII 2586\t1.38\n6654\tMgII 2796\t1.38\n6669\tMgII 2803\t1.38\n6757\tFeII 2599\t1.60\n7269\tMgII 2796\t1.60\n7296\tMgII 2803\t1.60\n7601\tMgII 2796\t1.72\n7629\tMgII 2803\t1.72\n\nAssuming the USNO star has R=15.64, the R magnitudes at the beginning and\nend of observing run were:\n\n2002 October 4.70 UT\tR=17.44\n\t     4.95 UT\tR=18.59\n\n[GCN OPS NOTE (05oct02):  This submission was received at 13:52 05 Oct 02 UT,\nbut was delayed in distribution due to the lack of an entry in the vetting\nlist.  A new entry was added and the submission manually invoked.]",
