Kilgard (Harvard-Smithsonian Center\nfor Astrophysics) report:\n\nA spectrum of the optical transient (GCN 961, 962, and 963) associated\nwith GRB010222 (GCN 959, 960) was obtained with the F. L. Whipple\nObservatory 1.5m Tillinghast telescope (+ FAST spectrograph) on 2001\nFebruary 22 beginning at UT 12:18, 4.92 hours after the burst. Two\n1200s spectra were obtained with a 3 arcsec wide slit and 300 l/mm\ngrating, yielding 6 Angstrom resolution over the range from 3620 to\n7560 A. The OT was approximately R=18.4 mag around the time of the\nspectroscopy (GCN 963).\n\nThis spectrum shows a blue continuum and many narrow absorption lines\nwith the following preliminary identifications:\n\nObserved\tLine\t\tRest\t\tRedshift\nWavelength\tID\t\tWavelength\n(angstrom)\t\t\t(angstrom)\n\n6405.9\t\tFeII\t\t2585.4\t\t1.477\n6438.7\t\tFeII(UV1)\t2598.4,2599.4\t1.477\n6924.2\t\tMgII\t\t2796\t\t1.476\n6941.6\t\tMgII\t\t2803\t\t1.476\n\nThe FeII (2585,2599) and MgII (2796,2803) doublet absorption features\nare strong, absorbing approximately 50 and 80% of the continuum at\nthose wavelengths. These absorption lines constrain the redshift of\nthe optical transient associated with GRB010222 to be at >= 1.476. If\nthe lines come from a host galaxy associated with the GRB, then the\nredshift is 1.476.\n\nAdditional unidentified absorption lines appear in the spectrum, data\nanalysis is continuing.\n\nThis message can be cited.",
