We report on the detection of a fast X-ray transient designated EP240806a, by the Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission. The transient started at 2024-08-06T04:47:53.9(UTC) and triggered the WXT on-board processing unit (trigger ID: 01709017970). The WXT position of EP240806a is R.A.= 11.491 deg, DEC = 5.091 deg (J2000) with an uncertainty of 2.1 arcmin (radius, 90% C.L. statistical and systematic). The lightcurve of the transient observed by the WXT lasts around 150 seconds. The average 0.5-4 keV spectrum can be fitted with an absorbed power law with a photon index of 2.6(-1.0, +1.2) (with a freely fitted column density value of 3.1(-2.5, +2.8) x 10^21 cm^-2). The derived average unabsorbed 0.5-4 keV flux is 1.9(-0.6, +1.8) x 10^(-9) erg/s/cm^2.
No previously known bright X-ray sources are found within the error circle around the source position. Following the WXT detection, we performed a follow-up observation with the Follow-up X-ray Telescope (FXT) on board the EP. Further follow-up observations are encouraged to identify the nature of this X-ray transient.
Launched on January 9, 2024, EP is a space X-ray observatory to monitor the soft X-ray sky with X-ray follow-up capability (Yuan et al. 2022, Handbook of X-ray and Gamma-ray Astrophysics).

W. X. Li, S. J. Xue (NAOC), M. Andrews, J. Farah, D. A. Howell, M. Newsome, E. Padilla Gonzalez, C. McCully, and G. Terreran (Las Cumbres Observatory), on behalf of a larger collaboration, report the optical follow-up observations of the fast X-ray transient EP240806a (Wu et al. 37063).
An uncatalogued source is detected in the individual as well as the stacked frames within the EP/FXT error circle and localized at coordinates
R.A. (J2000) = 11.4862 deg
Dec. (J2000) = 5.0945 deg
with an uncertainty of ~ 0.5 arcsec. The source has i ~ 21 mag, calibrated with SDSS and not corrected for Galactic extinction. There is no known object at the above position by checking MPC.
We thus conclude that the source is the optical counterpart candidate of EP240806a.
These observations were taken as part of the Global Supernova Project.

Cordier (CEA) on behalf of the Einstein Probe team
Following the detection of the fast X-ray transient EP240806a (Wu et al., GCN 37063), we performed an observation of EP240806a with the Follow-up X-ray Telescope (FXT) on board the Einstein Probe (EP) mission. The observation began at 2024-08-06T05:39:11, about 1 hour after the EP-WXT detection. The exposure time is 6058 seconds. Within the error circle of the WXT source, a slowly fading X-ray source was detected at R.A. = 11.4864 deg, DEC = 5.0941 deg, with an uncertainty of 10 arcsec (radius, 90% C.L. statistical and systematic), which is consistent with the position of the optical source detected by GSP (Li et al., GCN 37064). The average 0.5-10 keV spectrum can be fitted with an absorbed power law with a photon index of 2.2(-0.7, +0.7) (with a freely fitted column density value of 1.3(-0.7, +0.7) x 10^21 cm^-2). The derived average unabsorbed 0.5-10 keV flux is 1.2(-0.1, +0.1) x 10^(-12) erg/s/cm^2. There is no cataloged X-ray source within the error circle, suggesting this source being associated with EP240806a.
Launched on January 9, 2024, EP is a space X-ray observatory to monitor the soft X-ray sky with X-ray follow-up capability (Yuan et al. 2022, Handbook of X-ray and Gamma-ray Astrophysics).

We report on optical follow-up observations of the Einstein Probe (EP) fast X-ray transient EP240806a, detected by the EP Wide-field X-ray Telescope (WXT, Wu et al., GCN 3763) and by the EP Follow-up X-ray Telescope (FXT, Wang et al., GCN 37069), using one of the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT) 1-m telescopes located at the McDonald Observatory (Texas) LCOGT node, with a single 300 sec exposure in the SDSS r filter. The observation started at 10:40:19 UT on 2024-08-06, i.e. 5.87 hr after the EP trigger. An uncatalogued source is detected at about 1.2 arcsec from the FXT position at the coordinates
RA (J2000) = 00:45:56.679
Dec (J2000)= +05:05:39.64
with an uncertainty of ~ 0.4 arcsec, after astrometric calibration using Gaia DR3 stars, at r = 21.89 +/- 0.15 mag (AB), calibrated with Pan-STARRS stars in the field and not corrected for Galactic extinction. The position and r-band magnitude are consistent with the reports of Li et al. (GCN 37064) and Izzo and Malesani (GCN 37065), respectively.
This work makes use of observations from the Las Cumbres Observatory global telescope network (program IAC2024B-004).

WeiKang Zheng (UCB), Xuhui Han (NAOC), Pinpin Zhang (NAOC) and
Alexei V. Filippenko (UCB) report on behalf of the KAIT GRB team:
The 0.76-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT), located at
Lick Observatory, automatically responded to the fast X-ray
transient EP240806a from the Einstein Probe (Wu et al. GCNC 37063)
starting at 09:23 UT, ~4.60 hours after the trigger. A set of 24x60s
clear (roughly R) filter images were obtained. The optical counterpart
reported by Li et al. (GCN 37064), Izzo et al. (GCN 37065) and
Pérez-Fournon et al. (GCN 37080) was marginally detected in our
coadded images. The preliminary photometry gives a results of
21.6 +/- 0.1 mag at a mid time of 5.14 hours after the trigger.

Bauer (PUC), J. van Dalen (Radboud Univ.), M. E. Ravasio (Radboud Univ.), D. Mata Sanchez (IAC), M. A. P. Torres (IAC), report on behalf of a larger collaboration:
We observed the optical counterpart of EP240806a (Wu et al., GCN 37063) using the Gemini North-GMOS (imaging and spectroscopy mode) located on Mauna Kea.
Photometric observations started at 2024-08-06 UT 10:46:16.4 (i.e., ~6 hours after the EP detection), consisted of 4 exposures of 300 s each, and were carried out using filter r'. An uncatalogued source is detected inside the FXT position at the coordinates:
RA (J2000) = 00:45:56.67
Dec (J2000)= 05:05:39.37
The counterpart magnitude was r = 22.17 +/- 0.02 (AB) calibrated against the Pan-STARRS sources in the field. The transient is detected at a position consistent with the counterpart reported by Li et al. (GCN 37064), Izzo & Malesani (GCN 37065) and Pérez-Fournon et al. (GCN 37080).
Moreover, the target was observed by GMOS in spectroscopy mode. Observations started at 2024-08-06 UT 12:37:00.9 (i.e., ~7.8 hours after the EP detection), with 4 exposures of 900 s each and using the grating R150 covering a wavelength between ~400 and 1,000 nm. In a preliminary reduction of the spectra, we clearly detect a continuum over the entire wavelength range. From the detection of the Damped Lyman-alpha at ~4670 AA and multiple absorption features (e.g., S II, Si II, C II, Al II), we infer a redshift of z = 2.818, which means an average X-ray luminosity of ~1.4e50 erg/s.
We acknowledge excellent support from the Gemini North staff, especially Adam Smith.
