GRB 021108

GCN Circular 1679

Subject
IPN triangulation of GRB021108 (annulus)
Date

From
Kevin Hurley at UCBerkeley/SSL <khurley@sunspot.ssl.berkeley.edu>
K. Hurley, on behalf of the Ulysses GRB team,

E. Mazets and S. Golenetskii, on behalf of the Konus-Wind GRB team,
and

T. Cline, on behalf of the Ulysses and Konus GRB teams,
report:

Ulysses and Konus-Wind observed this GRB at 20395 seconds. As
observed by Ulysses, it had a duration of approximately 25 seconds, a
25-100 keV fluence of approximately 5.1E-06 erg/cm2, and a peak flux
of approximately 1.0E-06 erg/cm2 s over 0.25 seconds.

We have triangulated it to a preliminary annulus centered at RA,
Decl(2000)=0.517, -35.271 degrees, whose radius is 47.726 +/- 0.026
degrees (3 sigma ).

This annulus may be constrained and/or improved.

It is not known at this point whether this event was observed by Mars
Odyssey, and thus whether a small error box can be derived for it.

E. Mazets and S. Golenetskii, on behalf of the Konus-Wind GRB team, and

T. Cline, on behalf of the Ulysses and Konus GRB teams, report:

This event (GCN 1679) was also observed by RHESSI. Triangulation,
RHESSI Earth-blocking, and the Konus ecliptic latitude response
constrain the annulus (RA, Decl(2000)=0.517, -35.271 degrees, radius
47.726 +/- 0.026 degrees, 3 sigma) to that portion between RA,
Dec=296.8, -67.1 degrees, and 297.4, -46.5 degrees.

Only minor improvements to this localization are expected. As the Mars
Odyssey spacecraft was in safe mode, with all instruments off, a small
error box cannot be derived for this event.

T. Cline, on behalf of the Ulysses and Konus GRB teams, report:

Further analysis of this event (GCN 1679, 1683) reveals that it cannot
be localized to a single error box at this time. The annulus reported in
GCN 1679 (RA, Decl(2000)=0.517, -35.271 degrees, radius 47.726
+/- 0.026 degrees, 3 sigma) can only be constrained to two alternate
error boxes. One lies between between RA, Dec=296.8, -67.1 degrees,
and 297.4, -46.5 degrees, as reported in GCN 1683. The other lies
between RA, Dec=44.5, -9.2 degrees and 56.0, -26.7 degrees.
