The MAXI/GSC nova alert system triggered a bright uncatalogued X-ray transient
source at 2014-08-14T07:12:31 UT.
Assuming that the source flux was constant over the transit,
we obtain the source position at

  (R.A., Dec) = (182.515 deg, 49.348 deg) = (12 10 03, +49 20 52) (J2000)

with a statistical 90% C.L. elliptical error region with long and short radii
of 0.33 deg and 0.27 deg respectively.
The roll angle of long axis from the north direction is 126.0 deg
counterclockwise. There is an additional systematic uncertainty of 0.1 deg
(90% containment radius). The X-ray flux averaged over the scan was
232 +- 45 mCrab (4-10keV, 1 sigma error).

Without assumptions on the source constancy,we obtain a rectangular error
box for the transient source with the following corners:

(R.A., Dec) = (182.052 deg, 48.309 deg) = (12 08 12, +48 18 32) (J2000)
(R.A., Dec) = (181.153 deg, 48.617 deg) = (12 04 36, +48 37 00) (J2000)
(R.A., Dec) = (182.777 deg, 50.186 deg) = (12 11 06, +50 11 07) (J2000)
(R.A., Dec) = (183.701 deg, 49.873 deg) = (12 14 48, +49 52 21) (J2000)

There was no significant excess flux in the previous transit at UT 5:39 and
in the next transit at 8:43 UT with an upper limit of 20 mCrab for each.
A burst spectrum is relatively soft, and a blackbody fit to the energy
spectrum gives a temperature of about 1 keV.
Thus, a possibility of an X-ray burst can not be excluded.

Hi all,
This a circular drat. UVOT information is missing. May we have further comments from UBS?
Thanks,
Angie

GRB 140814A: Swift-XRT and UVOT observations

V.Mangano (PSU), [UBS]
report on behalf of the Swift team

Swift began observing the field of GRB 140814A (Uchida et al,. GCN Circ. on 2014-08-14 at 13:35:33 UT, 22.08 ks after the MAXI/GSC trigger. A tiled observation of four contiguous fields centered on the MAXI i.e., about 1 ks per field. Our mosaic covers the whole elliptical MAXI error circle (Uchida et al., GCN Circ. 16686).
In the XRT exposure, we do not find any new source, down to a three sigma upper limit of 3e-03 cts/s.

MASTER II robotic telescope (MASTER-Net: http://observ.pereplet.ru)
located in Kislovodsk was automaticaly inspected GRB140814A (Uchida et
al., GCN 16686) error box. The observations was started at 2014-08-14
17:36:16 UT i.e. 37425 sec (~10.3 h) after trigger time directly after
sunset and proceeded within ~1 hour. We cover full MAXI error-box (Uchida
et al. GCN 16686). On our single and coadd images we not found credible
optical transient brighter then 20.0m .

The 5-sigma upper limit has been about 18.5m on single 180 s image and
20.0m on coadd of 10 images with total exposure 1800 s.

GRB 140814A: Swift-XRT and UVOT observations

A. Vargas, V. Mangano, M. Siegel (PSU)
report on behalf of the Swift team.
Please disregard GCN Circ. 16887, which was sent in error. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Swift began observing the field of GRB 140814A (Uchida et al,. GCN Circ. 16686) on 2014-08-14 at 13:35:33 UT, 22 ks after the MAXI/GSC trigger. Swift performed tiled observations of four contiguous fields, centered on the MAXI error ellipse, with an exposure of 1 ks per field. Our mosaic covers the whole elliptical MAXI error circle (Uchida et al., GCN Circ. 16686).
In the XRT exposure, we do not find any new source, down to a three sigma upper limit of 3e-03 cts/s.

UVOT began observing the field 22 ks after the MAXI/GSC trigger. Observations of 871-937 seconds per tile were obtained in the u filter. No new source was detected down to a limiting magnitude of 20.
