S. B. Cenko (GSFC), A. P. Beardmore (U Leicester), C. Gronwall (PSU),
J. A. Kennea (PSU), N. P. M. Kuin (UCL-MSSL), K. L. Page (U Leicester)
and T. M. Parsotan (GSFC/UMBC/CRESSTII) report on behalf of the Neil
Gehrels Swift Observatory Team:
At 11:11:52 UT, the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) triggered and
located GRB 220930A (trigger=1125809). Swift slewed immediately to the
burst.
The BAT on-board calculated location is
RA, Dec 64.737, +13.352 which is
RA(J2000) = 04h 18m 57s
Dec(J2000) = +13d 21' 06"
with an uncertainty of 3 arcmin (radius, 90% containment, including
systematic uncertainty). The BAT light curve showed a complex
structure with a duration of about 20 sec and a secondary peak at about
70 seconds after the trigger time. The peak count rate
was ~3000 counts/sec (15-350 keV), at ~0 sec after the trigger.
The XRT began observing the field at 11:14:42.1 UT, 170.0 seconds after
the BAT trigger. XRT found a bright, uncatalogued X-ray source located
at RA, Dec 64.7149, 13.3500 which is equivalent to:
RA(J2000) = 04h 18m 51.58s
Dec(J2000) = +13d 21' 00.0"
with an uncertainty of 5.0 arcseconds (radius, 90% containment). This
location is 77 arcseconds from the BAT onboard position, within the BAT
error circle. No event data are yet available to determine the column
density using X-ray spectroscopy.
The initial flux in the 2.5 s image was 3.09e-09 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (0.2-10
keV).
UVOT took a finding chart exposure of 150 seconds with the White filter
starting 179 seconds after the BAT trigger. No credible afterglow
candidate has been found in the initial data products. The 2.7'x2.7'
sub-image covers 100% of the XRT error circle. The typical 3-sigma upper
limit has been about 19.6 mag. The 8'x8' region for the list of sources
generated on-board covers 100% of the XRT error circle. The list of
sources is typically complete to about 18 mag. No correction has been made
for the expected extinction corresponding to E(B-V) of 0.639.
Burst Advocate for this burst is S. B. Cenko (brad.cenko AT nasa.gov).
Please contact the BA by email if you require additional information
regarding Swift followup of this burst. In extremely urgent cases, after
trying the Burst Advocate, you can contact the Swift PI by phone (see

A.P. Beardmore (U. Leicester), P.A. Evans (U. Leicester), A. D'Ai
(INAF-IASFPA) and S.B. Cenko report on behalf of the Swift-XRT team:
We have analysed 6.9 ks of XRT data for GRB 220930A (Cenko et al. GCN
Circ. 32603), from 160 s to 35.9 ks after the BAT trigger. The data
comprise 390 s in Windowed Timing (WT) mode (the first 9 s were taken
while Swift was slewing) with the remainder in Photon Counting (PC)
mode. The enhanced XRT position for this burst was given by Evans et
al. (GCN Circ. 32605).
The late-time light curve (from T0+5.1 ks) can be modelled with a
power-law decay with a decay index of alpha=1.28 (+/-0.11).
A spectrum formed from the WT mode data can be fitted with an absorbed
power-law with a photon spectral index of 1.59 (+/-0.08). The
best-fitting absorption column is 4.9 (+0.6, -0.5) x 10^21 cm^-2, in
excess of the Galactic value of 2.8 x 10^21 cm^-2 (Willingale et al.
2013). The PC mode spectrum has a photon index of 1.82 (+0.16, -0.15)
and a best-fitting absorption column of 6.4 (+1.2, -1.1) x 10^21 cm^-2.
The counts to observed (unabsorbed) 0.3-10 keV flux conversion factor
deduced from this spectrum is 4.7 x 10^-11 (7.3 x 10^-11) erg cm^-2
count^-1.
A summary of the PC-mode spectrum is thus:
Total column: 6.4 (+1.2, -1.1) x 10^21 cm^-2
Galactic foreground: 2.8 x 10^21 cm^-2
Excess significance: 5.4 sigma
Photon index: 1.82 (+0.16, -0.15)
If the light curve continues to decay with a power-law decay index of
1.28, the count rate at T+24 hours will be 0.017 count s^-1,
corresponding to an observed (unabsorbed) 0.3-10 keV flux of 8.3 x
10^-13 (1.3 x 10^-12) erg cm^-2 s^-1.

The BAT light curve showed a complex structure with a duration of about 200 sec.
T90 (15-350 keV) is 180.47 +- 104.20 sec (estimated error including systematics).

on behalf of the AstroSat CZTI collaboration:
Analysis of AstroSat CZTI data with the CIFT framework (Sharma et al.,
2021, JApA, 42, 73) showed the detection of a long GRB 220930A which was
also detected by Swift-BAT (Cenko et at., GCN 32603), Swift-XRT (Evans
et al., GCN 32608), and Swift/UVOT (Belles et al., GCN 32609).
The source was clearly detected in the 20-200 keV energy range. The
light curve peaks at 2022-09-30 11:11:52.50 UTC. The measured peak count
rate associated with the burst is 435 (+49, -54) counts/s above the
background in the combined data of all quadrants, with a total of 1508
(+301, -353) counts. The local mean background count rate was 501 (+3,
-3) counts/s. Using cumulative rates, we measure a T90 of 9 (+8, -5) s.
It was also clearly detected in the CsI anticoincidence (Veto) detector
in the 100-500 keV energy range. The light curve peaks at 2022-09-30
11:11:51.80 UTC. The measured peak count rate is 911 (+80, -88) counts/s
above the background in the combined Veto data of all quadrants, with a
total of 3694 (+515, -521) counts. The local mean background count rate
was 1597 (+6, -7) counts/s. We measure a T90 of 13 (+5, -5) s from the
cumulative Veto light curve.
