GRB 240720B: AstroSat CZTI detection of a short burst

Analysis of AstroSat CZTI data with the CIFT framework (Sharma et al., 2021, JApA, 42, 73) showed the detection of a short-duration GRB 240720B which was also detected by INTEGRAL/SPI-ACS (Trigger 10799), Konus/WIND (IPN RAW notices).

The source was clearly detected in the CZT detectors in the 20-200 keV energy range. The light curve peaks at 2024-07-20 16:11:23.2 UTC. The measured peak count rate associated with the burst is 1454 (+216, -192) counts/s above the background in the combined data of all quadrants, with a total of 401 (+89, -80) counts. The local mean background count rate was 299 (+6, -9) counts/s. Using cumulative rates, we measure a T90 of 1.1 (+0.8, -0.7) s.

It was also clearly detected in the CsI anticoincidence (Veto) detector in the 100-500 keV energy range. The light curve peaks at 2024-07-20 16:11:22.6 UTC. The measured peak count rate is 570.8 (+69, -75) counts/s above the background in the combined Veto data of all quadrants, with a total of 546 (+210, -234) counts. The local mean background count rate was 1260 (+10, -10) counts/s. Due to the intrinsic 1 s binning of veto data, we cannot reliably estimate a T90 from it.

CZTI is built by a TIFR-led consortium of institutes across India, including VSSC, URSC, IUCAA, SAC, and PRL. The Indian Space Research Organisation funded, managed, and facilitated the project.

report on behalf of the SVOM team:

During the commissioning phase, the SVOM/GRM was triggered in-flight by a short GRB 240720B at 2024-07-20T16:11:23.200 UT (T0). which was also observed by INTEGRAL/SPI-ACS (TrigID 10798) and AstroSat/CZTI (GCN 36913).

The real-time alert data and light curves of SVOM/GRM were downlinked to the ground through the VHF system with low latency. The light curves show that this burst consists of a single peak with a duration of about 1 s.

The SVOM/GRM in-flight localization of this burst is (J2000):
RA: 304.9 deg
DEC: -61.9 deg
Error: 15.8 deg (1sigma, statistical only)
We caution that the calibration of SVOM/GRM is undergoing and this localization is subject to systematic errors. In addition, the position of this burst, as determined by GRM, is not located inside the ECLAIRs field of view.

The Space Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) is a China-France joint mission led by the Chinese National Space Administration (CNSA, China), National Center for Space Studies (CNES, France) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS, China), which is dedicated to observing gamma-ray bursts and other transient phenomena in the energetic universe. GRM is developed by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of CAS.

The short-duration GRB 240720B (AstroSat/CZTI detection: GCN 36913; SVOM/GRM detection: GCN 36915; INTEGRAL/SPI-ACS detection: trigger no. 10798; Konus/Wind detection trigger at 2024-07-20 16:11:28.495 UTC) was observed by the GRBAlpha 1U CubeSat (Pal et al. 2023, A&A, 677, 40; https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2023A%26A...677A..40P/abstract).

The detection was confirmed at the peak time 2024-07-20 16:11:29.1 UTC. The T90 duration measured by GRBAlpha is 0.5 s and the overall significance during T90 reaches 11.6 sigma.

GRBAlpha, launched on 2021 March 22, is a demonstration mission for a future CubeSat constellation (Werner et al. Proc. SPIE 2018). The detector of GRBAlpha consists of a 75 x 75 x 5 mm3 CsI scintillator read out by a SiPM array, covering the energy range from ~50 keV to ~1000 keV. To increase the duty cycle and the downlink rate, the upgrade of the on-board data acquisition software stack is in progress. The ground segment is also supported by the radio amateur community and it takes advantage of the SatNOGS network for increased data downlink volume.

The short-duration GRB 240720B (AstroSat/CZTI detection: GCN 36913; SVOM/GRM detection: GCN 36915; GRBAlpha detection: GCN 36955; INTEGRAL/SPI-ACS detection: trigger no. 10798; Konus/Wind detection trigger at 2024-07-20 16:11:28.495 UTC) was detected by the GRB detectors on board of the VZLUSAT-2 3U CubeSat (https://www.vzlusat2.cz/en/).

The data acquisition was performed by the GRB detector units no. 0 and no. 1. The detection was confirmed at the peak time 2024-07-20 16:11:22 UTC. The T90 duration is 1 s (1 s) and the significance during T90 reaches 11 sigma (12 sigma) for detector unit no. 0 (no. 1).

The GRB detectors on VZLUSAT-2 are a demonstration payload for a future CubeSat constellation (Werner et al. Proc. SPIE 2018). Two GRB modules of VZLUSAT-2 are placed in a perpendicular manner and each consists of a 75 x 75 x 5 mm3 CsI scintillator read out by a SiPM array, covering the energy range from ~30 keV to ~1000 keV. VZLUSAT-2 was launched on 2022 January 13 from Cape Canaveral.
