Subject
INTEGRAL GRBs added to GCN
Date
2002-09-03T00:53:03Z (22 years ago)
From
Scott Barthelmy at NASA/GSFC <scott@lheamail.gsfc.nasa.gov>
INTRODUCTION:
The INTEGRAL mission will soon launch (Oct 02) and two of its instruments
have the ability to locate (or just detect) GRBs. They expect 1-2 bursts/month
with a location uncertainty of <3 arcmin (radius) and with a time delay
of 1-2 minutes.

INTEGRAL and GCN:
There are 5 types of messages available from the INTEGRAL mission. The GCN
will distribute these INTEGRAL messages. You can get these messages
directly from the INTEGRAL ISDC or you can get them through GCN. There are
several advantages to using GCN:
a) For socket sites, you only have to maintain a single socket connection.
And there is no additional software involved.
b) There is only one format. For socket sites, the INTEGRAL-direct packet
is 400 bytes (and the GCN packet is 160 bytes). As part of the redistribution
service, GCN reformats the INTEGRAL information into the standard GCN
format -- this means the locations within the packet are in the standard
locations and that the information has been integerized (no need to understand
fl.pt. conversions). The date & time have also been converted to the standard
GCN format.
c) And there is e-mail format. Currently, the only format available directly
from the INTEGRAL machine is the Internet socket packet.
GCN will generate the standard format & style email, pager, and cellphone
messages for the INTEGRAL messages.
The down-side to using GCN instead of INTEGRAL-direct is an increase
in the time delay. But this is small: 0.5-1.0 sec added onto the nominal
1-2 min delay already from the INTEGRAL data telemetry & processing system.

TEST NOTICES:
In addition to the 5 basic GCN/INTEGRAL types, Test Notice versions of each
type are also available (via sockets, email, pagers, etc). These Test Notices
are available immediately (even prior to launch). They are issued every hour.
Socket sites may wish to subscribe to these Test packets to develope
their operations wrt to INTEGRAL prior to the October launch.

FORMATS:
For the sockets sites, the table below shows the content & format
of the 5 GCN/INTEGRAL packets. For the complete details of these packets,
please see the "Socket Packet Definition" document:
http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/sock_pkt_def_doc.html

The 5 Notices in e-mail format are shown below; plus a couple of pager and
short-pager formats are also shown. The rest can be found at:
http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/integral.html

ACTION ITEM:
Sites wishing to have these GCN/INTEGRAL Notices added to their sites's
configuration need to send an email to scott@lheamail.gsfc.nasa.gov.
Please be sure to identify the site_name in your request (or at least
some piece of information that will help me identify you from the other 240+
sites in the configuration file). New sites are always welcome; and you
can learn about GCN and answer the 13 questions needed to create a new entry
at http://gcn.gsfc.nasa.gov/gcn/invitation.html.

Sincerely,
Scott Barthelmy
